Twisting Tunnels of the Wild Underdark
The twisting tunnels of the Underdark are known for both their treachery and
unchanging features. The underground passages are very similar, the small
gray rock, with its rough surface, making up most of them. It is quite easy
to become lost in the drab corridors, with very few landmarks to guide the
way. The tons of rocks pressing in all sides gives the traveler an impression
of entrapment, which can overwhelm the senses of someone not native to the this
realm, and its never-ending features and curvatures.

A Long Narrow Shaft
This vertical tunnel seems to have been naturally formed, though its walls
seem to have been carved with artificial handholds, providing a method of
traversing its length with only moderate difficulty. The simple gray rock is
sparkled with the occasional crystal grain, creating a strange affect when
studied from the right angle. Besides the handholds, the walls are rather
rough and marked, with jagged points which reach out to snag falling debris.

Deep Within a Ravine
The tropical tree's sprout up a good forty feet into the air. The animals
sirt restlessly within the thick of the forest's ground. Some of the more
versatile animals fly through the air and land roughly onto other trees. Many
insects buzz through the air and rummage through the ground. Tropical forests
are notorious for their ability to weed out the hardened traveler from those
who just want to play with nature for a few days. It is here that men are
separated from the boys. The ability to withstand a night within this forest
is highly overestimated, for once you've journeyed far and wide into a tropical
forest such as this, you'd be forced to stay the night. It is here that the
ants get you. You might wake up in the morning and find yourself one big
swollen whelp, or you might find that some bat took a scat on your person. Now
snakes are a real threat too, you could also wake up to find some boa wrapped
around you so tightly that you'd be unable to breath. You might wake up and
discover some anaconda has swallowed your friend during the middle of the
the night. Worst case scenario, you might not wake up at all.

A Large Ravine
This huge ravine looks more like a crater. To wander down it would surely
take some time and would tax the most strongest of travelers. The tropical
forest doesn't seem to care of its existence however. Trees and the animals
that reside within them are numerous indeed. Something peculiar sticks out of
the ordinary however, something similar to that of other forests, game trails.
Only this can't be a game trail, for no game live within tropical forests,
which leads to one conclusion. Someone else, a humanoid being perhaps, lives
in this forest. A tough task ahead to discern which being it may be lays ahead.
A large cabin is visible just before the ravine, it looks like a some sort of
human construction from the make of it. It could be a mission.

The Base of a Fog Enshrouded Mountain
A wide ravine snakes its way from the base of the mountain disappearing
about midway up the mountains length. From this spot, as one gazes up the
ravine they notice that this mountain is actually the largest of a set of
smaller rocky ranges. A dark set of storm clouds linger at the mountains peak.
Bright flashes of lightning suddenly illuminate the sky and what lies at the
very peak of the mountain. During the lightning flashes one can barely make
out what appears to be a set of castle walls.

The Bottom of a Wide Ravine
Formed centuries ago as the great ice caps of Duris melted sending large
glaciers of ice plummetting from the mountainous peaks to the lands below, a
single large glacier carved this rocky ravine. Sheer walls of rock and granite
border the ravine. As one gazes about and takes measure of the path to be
traveled they quickly realize that should any bandits attack, that the only
alternative will be to fight, for there is no where to flee. Large boulders
are set into the ravine. The tops of the large rocks have been chiseled flat
and appear to be set so as to form a crude set of steps. The steps being much
to large to be walked upon except for those few races of giants that still
inhabit the lands of Duris.

Travelling Through a Rocky Ravine
The ravine twists and turns through the side of the mountain. The natural
path formed as a great glacier slid from the mountains peak to the valley
below centuries ago. Set at diagonal angles from each other are large
boulders. The giant rocks appear to be set so as to form a crude set of
stairs that lead up towards the mountains peak and also down to the valley
below. Sheer walls of rock rise up from the mountainside and fully border the
ravine. The walls would appear to prevent anyone, including the most
experienced of thieves from scaling the walls for there are no crevices or
cracks by which to make a firm grasp. As one gazes further along the ravines
distance, they notice that visibility becomes obscurred. A heavy mist of
dark grey clouds blocks ones vision and the ravine begins to make numerous
twists and turns.
Obvious exits: -East -Down

A Wide Ledge Overlooking the Valley
A wide ravine to the westt opens up onto this wide ledge overlooking the
valley below. As one peers down to marvel at the view they realize that they
must be close to the mountains peak for the tops of trees are all that's
visible below. A few vultures pass through the air below, having spotted the
nights meal. The ledge itself, although wide, appears to be very thin. The
black granite rock contrasts sharply with the brown and grey rock of the
mountain indicating that the ledge appears to be not a natural formation, but
rather man made in attempt to reach the mountains peak.

The Base of a Storm Battered Ravine
Dark thunderclouds linger along the mountainside. A fierce wind bellows
through the ravine, pushing on ones body and making further travel more
difficult. Although the wind howls with a piercing wail, it does little to
disperse the clouds of billowing darkness. The clouds, often releasing bolts
of lightning that strike in the distance, simply swirl in one places casting
dark shadows along the path above. During the sudden flashes of lightning
visions of giants moving along the horizon enter ones mind. When the flashes
subside only darkness remains leaving one to guess as to the reality of their
vision.

Travelling Through the Storm Clouds
At this point one realizes that their life may be in danger for a raging
storm batters the ravine. Large balls of hail fall from the sky with
tremendous force battering the edges of the ravine. The fierce wind rising
over the top of the mountains peak and gaining force as it travels through the
center of the mountain. As one walks along this path they feel as though a
dragons breath is blowing against their body. Flashes of lightning seem to
constantly strike a specific spot just ahead in the mountains. The bright
flashes of light fully illuminate the area if only for a brief second. During
these strikes one can see that the ravine being traveled has been widened so
that even large carts can be pulled up and perhaps to the other side.

The Edge of a Raging Thunderstorm
A Raging storm of dark clouds obscurres the path leading down the
mountain. To the north one sees that there is an opening to a small cave in
which one could take shelter from the ravaging storm. Large balls of hail fall
from the sky with tremendous force battering the mountains rocky walls.

of souls. The thunder so loud that one would think the very mountain itself is
about to explode into volcanic eruption. The bright flashes of light fully
illuminate the area if only for a brief second. During these strikes of
lightning one can see that the cave ahead is but a large arch and that the
path continues through the center of the mountain.

Beneath a Large Stone Arch
As one stands protected from the weather beneath this thick stone arch they
have a chance to adequately take full measure of their surroundings. To the
south a raging storm blasts the mountainside with all its fury. Bolts of
lightning flash through the sky striking the mountain in violent, thunderous,
explosions. To the north the same thunderclouds linger overhead, however the
fierce wind is non-existant. A few strikes of lightning can be seen streaking
through the sky and striking what appears to be a large stone structure in
the valley below. A set of crude stone steps lead down from the protective
arch into what appears to be a stone wall.

Walking on a Set of Large Stone Steps
Large boulders have been set to form a pair of crude stairs. The top of the
boulders have been chiseled so that their surface is completely flat. Sheer
walls of stone border the edges of the stairs. The walls provide no crevices
of hand holds in which one could attempt to scale should they be attaked. It
is difficult to gauge what lies ahead in the distance for the stairs take
numerous twists and turns. At certain points the path goes flat before one
continues back down the inner area of the mountain. In the distance a
sheer wall of stone rises up like the walls to a great castle.

Before the Gates of Stragthor
A tall set of stone gates guard the entrance to Stragthor, valley of the
storm giants. As one surveys the construction they realize that the occupants
behind the protective walls have built their fortress from the natural stone
of the mountain. This effort allows them to use the natural protective
properties of duris as well as allowing them access to the thunderous storms
that linger overhead. Every so often a flash of lightning fully illuminates the
otherwise dark and gloomy sky. The loud explosion created as the lightning
streaks across the sky appears to come from just beyond the gates for one can
feel the ground shake as the bolt strikes.

The Southern Gate of Stragthor
To the south lies the main gate of Stragthor, Valley of the Storm Giants.
Erected centuries ago as the last safe haven of this warrior race, Stragthor
has now opened its gates to allow its warriors to roam the land of the humans
in an effort to quelch the ravaging plague of Underdark denizens. As one
enters the valley they realize that it resembles more a city carved into the
stone mountain. Large stone buildings border wide rocky roads. The major
buildings appear to border the city and are actually carved into what remains
of the mountainside. Dark thunderclouds hover overhead casting a deep shadow

stone structures. The structures rising from the ground like tall towers to
flank the road. As one gazes about the valley they notice that the entire city
has been carved from the side of the mountain. Rising up on the outskirts of
the city are the peaks of the surrounding mountain. The peaks providing a
natural wall that protects its citizens from large scale attacks as well as
ensuring the city remains safely hidden. Large grassy areas are barely visible

large square or gathering place.

been opened, now attracts races from across the lands of Duris. A thriving

becomes one of the safer city for merchants and traders to conduct their
business.

Walking Along Stragthor's Southern Wall
The wall that borders the southern edge of the road has been carved from
the side of the mountain range. The storm giants, wishing to be as close to
the torrential storms that hover overhead, simply excavated a large depression
into the side of the mountain ranges. The natural barrier serves as both a
defense mechanism, as the walls are of solid rock, and as camoflauge from
intruding eyes. At first glance as one walks toward Stragthor they would
simply assume that they are travelling a mountainous path. A ledge can be seen
about thirty feet in the air extending from the southern wall and overhanging
the path. Guards moving about the ledge keep a watchful eye over the city and
on any merchants moving just outside the city's boundary.

The Southwestern Corner of Stragthor
Mounted on the stone wall is a thick metal ladder that leads up to what
appears to be an observation post. A wooden door to the platform appears to
provide one the only access. Dark thunderclouds swirls directly overhead and
it would appear that those individuals in the observation post could simply
hold up their arms and grasp the clouds. Streaks of lightning flash from the
sky striking objects somewhere in the heart of the city. As each lightning
bolt strikes, one fells the ground shake beneath their feet.

A Bend Around the Mountain Side
The road being traveled twists slightly as it extends across to another
mountain. The storm giant architects as they created the valley made as much
use of the cluster of mountain ranges as possible. The sheer walls of rock
still extend toward the sky providing the first line of defense for those
occupants still living in the city. A small ledge can be seen extending from
the wall of the mountain. Walking atop the ledge are storm giant sentries
keeping a watchful eye on the path approaching the main gates. Small metal
torches are placed in the stone walls. The flame casting a dim light across
the road.

Traveling Across a Large Stone Bridge
This large stone bridges links the mountain peak to the east with the peak
to the west. The high arching bridge provides one a clear view of Stragthor,
valley of the storm giants. As one stops to gaze out over the valley of
Stragthor they realize that the storm giants must have worked on excavating
the peaks of these mountain ranges for centuries. It is quite mysterious as to
why this effort was not discovered until now although the storm clouds that
hover over the area do keep the peaks masked in a veil of darkness. To the
north one can see what appears to be a large plataeu of grass and shrubs.
Bordering the west side of this mountain range are tall stone buildings.

Walking Through a Wide Ravine
This wide ravine would appear to be about one hundred yards across. On both
of its edges are sheer walls of tall stone. The ravine is at a slight angle
sloping up toward the north. As one walks in this direction they begin to see
tall stone strutures like that found in the cities across Duris. To the south
the road appears to slope down toward the great walls of Stragthor. A high
arched bridge is visible just to the south and would appear to provide a path
for one to walk across to the other mountain.

A Stone Path Atop the Mountain
This twisted path leads north toward some large stone buildings. As one
gazes in that direction the stone buildings appear to be large obilisks
carved from the mountain itself. The structures rising from the rocky plateau
to stand defiantly against the skyline. The rolling thunderclouds often
respond with arcs of lightning that race across the sky striking the very tips
of the buildings. The road is comprised of smooth flat rocks that have been
set into the hard stone at precise angles. A smooth black mortar fills the
eges of the stone making it appear as though the path is actually a road.
To the east a large building is visible. The amount of traffic going in and
out of the stone doors would leave one to believe it is some sort of inn or
dining establishment.

The Thundercloud Inn
This large cavern appears to have been carved directly into the side of the
mountain. Within the cavern numerous caves can be seen. The caves being
individual rooms where traveling merchants retire in privacy for the night. As
one peers directly overhead they notice that there is no ceiling in the
cavern. Instead one has a clear view to the thunder clouds that engulf the
entire city. The arcs of lightning racing across the sky providing a visual
light show for any weary traveler. A single counter of stone stands in the
far corner of the room. Large mithril keys hanging from wooden pegs unlock the
gates that bar the vacant rooms. A small pit filled with thick burning
branches sits in the middle of the room. The flame rising up to lick the spit
of goat meat skewered across its top. The smell filling the room with a sweet
and pleasant aroma.

The Lightning Breath Bar
This large cavern appears to be a bar where storm giant warriors meet to
exchange tales of recent battles. Large stone stools sit beneath large
granite tables. The tables having been chiseled until the are almost perfectly
round. Small circular grooves along the table cut into the granite so that the
tankards of ale do not slide off onto the rocky floor. A large slab of rock
sits at the far corner of the room. The rock serving as a counter in which a
lone storm giant serves his drinks. A large iron pot behind the bar is filled
with a brewing concoction that is served to the patrons visiting the bar.
