   "In ages past, a great wizard know as Llevron Dor grew tired of the
places of men. Taking himself, his servants, and his pets, he sought across
the great ocean for a land where he could be alone.  After many days of
wandering the sea, he found a rich land untouched by the hand of man.  Using
his magic, Llevron Dor set about building a haven for himself and his people
deep in the wilderness.  And, he remained there for many years, happy.

   "However, the decendents of the servants he brought with him grew restless
with the seclusion.  They wished to travel back to civilization, to mingle
with thier own kind.  Slowly, a few at a time, the servants went out, looking
for a way to return to the land of men.  One explorer, Celicus, found the
original route that brought them to the wilderness so long ago.  The news of
passage home grew fast, and, almost overnight, the servants were all but gone,
only a few loyal servants remained behind.  Llevron Dor soon found that the
operation of his home was too much for his remaining servants, and set about
to find a solution.  He observed the wolf; cunning, strong, intelligent,
agile, and most of all, loyal to thier pack.  He thought the wolf would make
an ideal servant, so began to experiment with wolves, changing thier form,
increasing thier intelligence, and lengthening thier lifespan.  His first
success he named Lionel.  Lionel was a quick learner, eager to please, and
truly devoted to Llevron.  And from Lionel, Llevron created an new race of
beings.. the Wolfen.

   "All was well in the beginning, the Wolfen turned to Lionel as thier
leader, and Lionel turned to Llevron as his god.  They worked hard, trained
quickly, and soon were running all operations of the haven.  The humans who
were former servants, now became supervisors over the wolfen.  And it is in
this, that was the downfall of Llevron.  Having been servants so long,
suddenly thrust into positions of superiority, and supervising beings that
they did not consider to be 'real', they abused thier positions, and thier
wolfen subordinates.  The wolfen people appealed to Lionel, begging him to do
something.  Lionel approached Llevron with the tales cruelty, but Llevron
only nodded, and wanted to get back to his experiments.  This infuriated
Lionel.  Slowly, he began to organize the Wolfen, training those who could
understand some of the baser concepts of magic, having those who were best
suited as warriors to practice at night with sticks.  Soon, they were ready
to fight back.  Leading his people, Lionel razed the houses in Haven, easily
crushing the few human guards that watched over the town.  People fled to the
castle for safety, and the night ended in a stand-off.. a siege.  Llevron,
being a peaceful man, met with Lionel, trying to vie for peace.  The terms
were simple: all humans must leave the wilderness in a tenday, or there
would be no humans left alive on the continent in a fortnight.  Llevron,
outraged, refused the terms, and vowed to see every last wolfen dead.

   "Llevron returned to the palace, and locked himself in his personal tower.
Many days later, he emerged with nine swords.  Eight he cradled in his arms,
the last he left hanging from his side.  He gave these swords of power to his
most trusted assistants, and instructed them in thier use.  The next day, the
greatest battle the land had ever seen broke out.  Powerful magics were
unleashed, and thousands of wolfen were swept away in mass destruction.  But,
even with that much raw power, the sheer number of wolfen soon turned the tide
of the battle.  Llevron Dor was slain as he tried to complete a circle of
teleportation, his personal bodyguards being ripped to shreds around him.

   "Life for the Wolfen, after the death of the humans, was good. The found
new magic in Llevron Dor's tower, and began to rebuild Haven.  But, Lionel was
concerned.  He saw Haven as a symbol of the humans, and the wolfen needed to
have something of thier own. So, by royal decree, the Wolfen were commanded to
leave Haven and build thier own lives outside of its walls.  No wolfen was
to return within, and all record and memory of its existence was to be
forgotten.  As the last wolfen left, Lionel cast a mighty spell that rendered
the city immaterial and invisible.  And the Wolfen went out to seek thier
fortune in the world..."

lightning can be seen emanating from beyond the northern city walls.

This area seems to be exceptionally narrow!

A Collapsed Tunnel
   This old, abandoned tunnel appears to have caved in at some distant time
in the past.  Great slabs of rock are jutting out from the floor, making it
difficult to move.  A thick layer of dust has combined with moisture to form
a kind of mortar between the boulders, blocking any attempt to move them.  A
recent tremor, however, has cracked part of the mortar, and a soft light can
be seen shining through it.
This area seems to be exceptionally narrow!
